Okay, so, yes, this was a re-read. And yes, I started watching the Netflix series and then immediately opted to pause until I’d speed re-read the book. I’m counting this as a 2021 because I never said these had to be new reads…
Shadow and Bone was as I remembered. Reading it now in 2021, the book does feel like YA of a different age — because it is! 2012 is almost a decade ago. It was the year of A Fault in Our Stars by John Green; and YA in particular is not a monolith. It is in constant flux. Overall, I had a good time refreshing myself on the book world of the Grishaverse, thought it does show its age.
