A new year means a new TBR! Last year I read 19 books, and last year was the first year I tracked my reading since summer reading programs at the local library when I was a kid. I think I can do better than 19 reads in 2021. But, who knows, this year is already proving to be a roller coaster.
This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal el-Mohtar and Max Gladstone
Started: 3 January 2021
Finished: 9 January 2021
I meant to read this book in 2020. I technically started it once, but never added it to the TBR, because I wasn’t in the right mindset for this beautiful, lyrical, poetic, heartfelt novella. (Can you guess? I liked it!) The prose is truly breathtaking in it’s sharpness and brevity. Every word in this 198 page book is purposeful and exact, full of meaning and conveying a world I would gladly spend hundreds of pages in. It’s a refreshing and unique twist on a spy versus spy narrative that spans the multiverse. It will tug at your heartstrings.
In hindsight, I think it was meant to be my first read on 2021, and I think I was meant to read it after this week, a week no one who calls themselves an American will ever forget. Why? Well:
Books are letters in bottles, cast into the waves of time, from one person trying to save the world to another. Keep reading. Keep writing. Keep fighting. We’re all still here.
