The Obelisk Gate by N.K. Jemisin (The Broken Earth, book 2)

As a reader, I’m captivated by this trilogy. As a writer I’m astounded by the intricacy of the world and the rawness of the pages between these two covers. Jemisin’s writing is both immediate and detached at times, the voice moves fluidly from observation to being heartbreakingly personal. At its core, The Broken Earth trilogy is the story of broken people making desperate choices in a broken world. Which, maybe rings a little closer to home than it does if I had been reading these when they first came out. It’s hard to put to words what exactly grabs me about Jemisin’s writing. But it’s magnetic. Powerful. Beautiful. I am excited and worried to see how this beautiful story wraps up in its conclusion.
