This book’s dedication is to Tamora Pierce, and in the acknowledgements the author writes about being inspired by Alanna: The First Adventure by Tamora Pierce. I think Sarah Beth Durst accomplished her goal: this book is inspiring and heartwarming. It is a Tamora Pierce-esque story for its adult audience. It was a fun standalone fantasy novel and I’d wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who grew up with Alanna or Keladry of Mindelan.
