Next up: Crescent City: House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas

This was an interesting one. I read the first few chapters when I decided to read it next, and it was rough. I wasn’t clicking with the voice of the main character, and I wasn’t clicking with the worldbuilding at all. There was a pretty steep dump of information in the first few chapters and it was a slog. So I put the book down until the evening of the 28th. And then proceeded to devour the remaining 700+ pages of the book.
I know Sarah J. Maas can be a polarizing author for many. But, for what it’s worth: I’ve enjoyed the Throne of Glass series and A Court of Thrones and Roses series for what they were. The books aren’t perfect; I agree with some of the criticisms, but one of the reasons this 2020 TBR is *not* me actually reviewing the books I’m reading is because I’m not a critical reader. Can I be? Sure. Is that fun for me? Nope. If a piece of fiction carries me away, I’m going to like it. I’ll forgive a lot if I connect in any small way with the viewpoint characters.
SO: there are things about Crescent City: House of Earth and Blood that I didn’t love, but at the end of the day the main character Bryce grew on me, the depiction of dealing with trauma was raw, and well-done, and tugged on my heartstrings, and the book was a fun ride by the end. Tissues may have been required.
