I have mixed feelings about this one. Interestingly, I had the exact opposite experience reading Starsight as I had reading the first book in this series, Skyward. When I read Skyward last year, it was a slow burn. It took me much longer than usual for a Sanderson story to feel compelled to keep reading it. But then, about half-way through, it hooked me and I couldn’t put it down.

With Starsight, it started strong. I was eager to jump back into the main character Spensa’s point of view. The book starts with a scene of starship dogfighting that tossed me right into the action. But then, about halfway through the book, despite the introduction of many elements that I traditionally love: expansion of the world, introduction to new races and locations, I just put it down. I can’t point to a singular reason: the story was interesting, pacing didn’t feel slow, I just was not feeling it.

I finally picked Starsight up again a week or so ago, and pushed through to the ending. I was actually getting hooked again: and then the book ended, abruptly, in quite a cliffhanger.

Knowing Brandon Sanderson, I won’t have to wait too long for the next book. I’m still interested enough in the world he’s built to pick up the next installment. But overall, Starsight was middling for me. If you’ve read it, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
